My research
I came to Eastern European history rather by chance, because I started learning Russian at secondary school out of boredom. I soon realised, however, that almost everything that interested me had played out in particularly extreme ways in Russia: literature, nationalism, socialism, and the violent history of the 20th century. Since then, my focus has broadened from Russia to other countries, particularly Ukraine, but my interests remain the same.
