Is there any software that can read Sütterlin script? I have some old family recipes and would like to have them transcribed.
Dear Max Florin Brauner
Oh, how lovely that you’ve found some old family recipes. You can learn to read this handwriting. It’s really fascinating and, in my opinion, great fun too. There’s also the e-learning platform ad fontes at the University of Zurich: I’d perhaps start with this page.
But fortunately, there’s now also a shortcut via artificial intelligence. Thousands upon thousands of pages of handwritten transcriptions have been processed into a large model, and on Transkribus , you can upload a scan or even a mobile phone photo directly and have it recognised. With the settings “handwritten” and “German” you’re sure to get some pretty good results.
I hope you have lots of fun discovering and deciphering the recipes – and, of course, trying them out in the kitchen!
With warm regards,
