I’m so sorry that you and your family have been through such a difficult time. A one-off traumatic experience like yours can affect a child or young person’s development in various ways, but it doesn’t always have to be negative.

Children and young people may experience a range of feelings following such an event – fear, sadness or confusion are perfectly normal. These emotions can sometimes be overwhelming and make it difficult for children and young people to express or understand their feelings. Some children and young people also worry that something similar might happen again. In addition, some children and young people react with changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal, outbursts of anger or difficulties at school. These reactions are often temporary; in other words, they can return to normal over time, particularly once the event has been processed.

Interestingly, difficult experiences can also lead to something positive, known as ‘post-traumatic growth’. This means that individuals can emerge stronger and more mature from such experiences. Children and young people may, for example, learn to cope better with stress, become more resilient and often develop a deeper understanding of the importance of family and friendships. Such experiences can therefore bring families closer together, as people realise just how important solidarity is. Furthermore, such experiences can lead us to develop greater empathy for others who have been through similar situations.

It is important that children and young people receive support in such situations. Talking to a friend, a school psychologist, a trusted teacher or another trusted adult can be very helpful in coming to terms with what they have been through. Open and supportive communication within the family can also help the child or young person to feel safe and loved.

It is important to understand that everyone reacts differently to trauma and that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to deal with it. The traumatic experience that you and your family have been through can be difficult, but there are also opportunities for positive growth and development afterwards.
