Health education in schools can indeed promote health equity and, consequently, a fairer distribution of health. After all, health inequalities are often linked to socio-economic factors. Schools are a place where all children can be reached equally – regardless of their background, their parents’ income or their parents’ level of education. Health education in schools can therefore offer all children learning opportunities and resources.

Early intervention and prevention

Through targeted health education in schools, children can learn to develop healthy behaviours. These include nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, stress management and knowledge about mental health. These preventative measures are particularly important for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may have less access to health information or healthy lifestyles at home.

Access to information and resources

Furthermore, school programmes can provide information about public health services or facilitate access to medical care. They can refer families to services such as vaccinations, dental check-ups or psychological support.

Building health literacy

A person’s health literacy – the ability to understand and apply health-related information – is crucial to their long-term health. Through health education in schools, children and young people can acquire health literacy at an early age and pass on their knowledge to their families.

Involving all stakeholders

A successful school health programme involves teachers, parents and the local community. Schools can act as catalysts for spreading knowledge about healthy lifestyles to wider sections of society.

Challenges and limitations

Unfortunately, schools in disadvantaged areas in particular often have fewer resources to provide high-quality health education. Furthermore, without the support of the family environment, only a limited impact can be achieved. In addition, one-off measures are less effective than long-term, systemic health promotion.

Health education in schools should therefore promote healthy behaviours and provide access to information and resources. It is crucial that it specifically addresses structural inequalities. Programmes must be designed to reach disadvantaged groups in particular.
