My research

I am interested in the relationship between power and knowledge. How do political structures create and organise knowledge? I have focused in particular on how politics regulates, represents and categorises different forms of diversity – cultural, religious and ethnic. In my work on the colonial history of the Middle East and South Asia, I have been particularly interested in how the imperial powers utilised knowledge about religion to legitimise their power.
